How to outrank websites that have more backlinks than your website

If you want to get high rankings on Google and be more SEO friendly, it is necessary that many other websites link to your website. This is something that most webmasters know. What many webmasters still don’t know is that a website that has only a few inbound links can outrank a website that has many inbound links.

Why many backlinks alone are not enough

If a website has a high number of inbound links, it does not automatically rank highly for any keyword.

Google specifies the position of a website in its search results by on-page factors and off-page factors. On-page factors are all factors that can be found on your web pages:

* Did you optimize the web page for the targeted keyword?
* Can search engines find all pages of your website through the links on your website?
* Is the HTML code of your web pages error free so that search engine spiders can easily parse your pages?
* Does your robots.txt file allow search engine spiders to visit your web pages?
* Are your web pages free of all spam elements (no hidden text, no sneaky redirects, no keyword stuffing, cloaking, etc.?

Off-page factors are the factors that cannot be found on your web pages:

* How many websites link to your site?
* Are these links from related high quality pages?
* Do social bookmark websites link to your site?
* Do the links to your website include the keywords for which you want to be ranked highly?

All of these factors are important if you want to get high rankings on Google, Yahoo and Bing.

How long does it take to get top rankings on Google?

Many people who start a website think that it is possible to get high rankings on Google within a few days. Unfortunately, this is not possible. Competition on the Internet is fierce and there are several factors that influence how long it takes until Google lists your website.

1. How old is your website?

If you have a brand new website then you have to wait. You can submit your website to Google but Google will only index your website if other websites link to your site.

In addition, you have to prove that your website is not spammy. Google has several filters for new websites and you have to earn Google’s trust before your website can get lasting high rankings. A new website can get good rankings for less competitive keywords but it usually takes about 6 months to gain the minimum level of trust that is necessary to get high rankings.

2. How optimized was your website before?

If you have an old and established website that was blocking search engine robots due to a broken robots.txt file or a bad website navigation then it can be relatively easy to show up in search engines.

If you remove the factors that keep search engine robots from your web pages then search engines will list your website relatively quickly. Of course, this doesn’t work if you have a new site.

Why link building is like losing weight

Link building is one of the most important things that you have to do if you want to get high rankings on Google and other major search engines.

Indeed, there are many parallels. The following points illustrate why link building is like losing weight and how this can help you to get better results.

Fact 1: You have to be consistent

appleIt won’t help your rankings much if you get many links at once and then stop building links. Search engines also consider how many websites link to your site over time.

Doing a 12 hour workout on a single day and then doing nothing won’t help you to lose weight. It will probably be bad for your health. The same applies to links. If you get many links at once and then no links at all, search engines might think that you try to cheat them with a linking system.

If you want to lose weight, you have to be consistent. You might not see immediate results but there is a constant change and some day, you’ll find that you’re much thinner.

Link building works exactly like that. Do not try to game search engines by joining link systems or buying links. Get one link at a time, optimize your pages and the rankings of your website will improve steadily.
