Many people that I know have approached me with the same issue that occurs when you design an effective SEO campaign, build a good number of links to your website, but get very little shift in how well your website actually ranks. Many people struggle with this issue, and it is very likely that the issue could be related to your backlink indexing.
Before I go too much further, I need to explain how this all works though. You see, if you generate a backlink, Google needs to be able to crawl that link in order for it to be aware of its existence. In that instance, if the backlink is on a page that is not indexed by Google, then it will not be able to be aware of its existance. This means that if you are building links, there are going to be a number of links that will sit within the depths of the web, never being discovered, rendering your efforts worthless.
So, how can we fix this problem? There are a few ways that we can get around this, but first, you are going to need to know about an interesting function within the WordPress script. WordPress pingbacks are a system that notifies you when someone is linking to your page, even well before the page has been indexed. As you might be able to realize at this point, you can use this to your advantage.
So, by now, you would understand that if you create a link, and the page that the link appears on is not indexed in Google, then it will carry no weight. Sad but true. Now, we are going to look into how we can solve this problem.
By using simple Ping services such as Pingler, you can send a ping to these pages that will notify Google and other services that they exist. This is one method, however it can have a fairly low success rate, as you are not actually building links to these pages.
The other more powerful method that I use is a bit more complex, but quite powerful. By being a little creative, you can create a custom RSS feed of your pingbacks using RSS mash technology (as it is referred to), and submit these feeds to some popular RSS directories. The benefit of this method is that you will, in effect, be building links to the pages that are linking to you, which works in two ways. It builds the importance of these pages, plus it also indexes them so that the search engines can be made aware of the links that are pointing to your site.
An alternative measure is to employ the use of WordPress plugins that create RSS feeds from your pingbacks. There are many options available to you, with a good number of these offering functionality that will not just create the RSS feeds, but also submit them through to RSS directories, and social bookmarking services. This is a very handy tool to employ, especially if you want to get the most out of your backlinking efforts, rather than wasting time building a large number of links when only a portion will actually be indexed.
Of course, you can take it the next step further, and focus some link building efforts on these pages, however this is an advanced strategy that I will not go into today. The key is to ensure that all of the pages that are linking your website are indexed. The methods that I mentioned today will help increase your backlink indexing rate, so that you can be certain that your link building efforts are much more effective.
